LKSI is a non for profit organization incorporated in 2000. The members represent Civic, Political, Agricultural, Industrial, Environmental, and Recreational interests. The organization works for the future protection, use, and preservation of the Lower Kaskaskia River Basin.
LKSI was formed as a response to a watershed plan that was to be submitted for national recognition. Some local leaders were leery of the effort and wanted to work as a group for two years to understand the value of a diverse group and to work as a team locally.
This was accomplished by facilitating and carrying out continuing consultations among the stakeholders to encourage development of consensus policies for guiding public and private activities in the basin and to find ways for them to cooperate in putting those policies into practical effect.
In 2002, LKSI accepted funds and agreed to carry on for the former Kaskaskia Industrial Development Corporation (KIDC) whose many members had worked hard for 47 years to attract industry and provide jobs in the Kaskaskia River Valley. LKSI is also a member of the Kaskaskia Watershed Association.
Individuals and businesses that are interested in the Kaskaskia River and all the benefits that it provides to the region should become members. Everyone is encouraged to join before the end of March so that the member and a guest can participate in the Annual Barge Trip. This is a benefit that members receive by belonging to the organization. This is a highly sought benefit.

Every other year, LKSI holds the Barge Trip, which is only open to members and sponsors.
This trip is held on the first Friday after Labor Day and is a way for people and elected officials to become better acquainted with the value of the river to the local area.
The trip starts at one of the port terminals and begins boarding at 5:00 PM. A meal on the barge is served along with other refreshments and dessert. A short program is conducted that informs those on the barge what the navigation project brings to the region. In addition, the Congressman is also on board to visit with people and businesses.
